Romans 2:17-29, Ah Yes . . . Circumcision

Key Verse

Rather, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart—it is spiritual and not literal. Such a person receives praise not from others but from God.

RCL Daily Devotion for Thursday, June 20, 2019

RCL Daily Devotions written by Daniel D. Maurer from RCL Worship Resources (see more).

No daily devotional for the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) would be complete without a discussion of the wonderful topic of circumcision. Why in the world was Paul so obsessed with it? From my understanding, it was on account of early Jewish Christians who demanded that recent (gentile) followers of Jesus should be circumcised.

My what a different religion we’d have today had that taken hold!

For one thing, it’s more likely that, had that been the case, Christianity would not have spread as quickly as it had!

Oddly enough though, regardless of this talk of trimming penises . . . the main point is what requirements are really to be followed to be an authentic or bona fide follower of Christ? According to Paul, it was faith and trust in the promises of God through God’s son, Jesus.

Period.

Thank goodness! Whew! (At least for me . . . I’m a guy.)

It’s easy, God, to place restrictions and requirements around your free grace, God. May I be a candle in the night to show your open grace to all. Amen.
