Psalm 79:1-9, Laid Low

Key Verse

Do not remember against us the iniquities of our ancestors;
let your compassion come speedily to meet us,
for we are brought very low.
Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us, and forgive our sins,
for your name’s sake.
— Psalm 79:8-9

RCL Daily Devotion for Thursday, September 19, 2019

RCL Daily Devotions written by R. Fergus Moir from RCL Worship Resources (see more).

We’ve all been laid low. Sometimes there are things we just don’t have control over. But I’ve found that when I’m feeling squashed under the weight of the world, it’s more often because I’ve forgotten that I’m not the one in charge of the universe. I’m trying to bulldoze through my life on my own terms and life is just not playing by my rules. In those moments, I’ve turned away from the One who is my source, forgotten who’s really running things around here. In those moments, I need God’s compassion and forgiveness so that I can let go of all those things I can’t control and get back to the work that is mine to do.

God offers us this compassion and forgiveness, always welcoming us back when we wise up and go home again, just like the prodigal son.

God, forgive me for turning away from you. In your compassion, call me home to you again. Amen.
