RCL Daily Devotions written by R. Fergus Moir from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
When I think about worshipping other gods, the first thing that comes up for me is material possessions. Money. Growing up in America, I have been inundated all my life with messages that being rich and having all the stuff I could imagine would make me happy. And even better, if I had all that stuff, I wouldn’t have to rely on God anymore.
Hah! So were the Israelites constantly tempted to worship other gods—the gods of the nations around them who promised an easier, softer way. And what did it net them? Misery, time and again. So, too, with so many who seem to “have it all” yet can’t seem to find any peace in life whatsoever.
Personally, I find that meditating on God’s work and musing on God’s mighty deeds and holy Way gives me more than money could ever buy. Money can never go toe to toe with God and win. After all, “What god is so great as our God?”
Holy and Eternal God, expose all the false gods I find myself tempted to worship, and remind me that your way, O God, is holy. Amen.
