RCL Daily Devotions written by Daniel D. Maurer from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
It’s funny how our memories work. All it takes is smelling a certain smell, hearing a particular phrase, or looking the way the light is cast into a room, and instantly you can remember something that occurred to you in the past.
Reading today’s psalm reminded me when I was still in seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. I believe we read this passage in our daily chapel service and sitting next to me was a fellow classmate. He leaned over and whispered, “Well that’s not exactly the image I first thought of, but hey, oil on your collar maybe isn’t such a bad thing.”
It wasn’t particularly funny, but somehow the memory stays firmly stuck up in my head. I probably remember it because today’s image is quite strange.
God’s word doesn’t always make sense to us on the surface, but through time we learn that there are many ways to experience the blessings of God.
Don’t hold your breath about me testing out the oil-on-the-head-running-down-my-collar experiment though—I’m satisfied keeping that image firmly in my imagination rather than in real life!
How does God speak to you with strange passages from the Bible?
