This is not financial advice, of course. Jesus is just changing the definition of “more.” We want to define “more” in absolute terms: Ten is more than one, so if we give $10 we’re giving more than the person who gives $1 and we can feel good about ourselves.
But Jesus defines “more” in relative terms. He’s calling out those who have far more than they could ever need to live on, yet give only a small portion so they get to hang onto their wealth, those who live with the constant fear of scarcity, who put their reliance on money instead of on God. They haven’t given “more” at all. In fact, they’ve given far less.
I’m ashamed to find myself in this category more often than I’d like to admit. I don’t want to rely on God to meet my needs. I’d rather just give the bare minimum and get on with my life. God calls me into deeper trust, patiently teaching me that giving of my self, my time, and my possessions as the widow gave promises far greater rewards than clinging to what was never mine to begin with.
Gracious God, teach me to be generous, that I might see your great generosity to me. Amen.
