RCL Daily Devotions written by R. Fergus Moir from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
Don’t you feel a little sorry for the man in this story? He was so earnest, so faithful, so honest about what he wanted to know. “How do I inherit eternal life?” He had observed all the commandments, done everything “right.” And Jesus, hearing this, loved him. Jesus came into a lost and broken society in a lost and broken world, and dealt with humanity at its most flawed, and here comes this man who just gets it. I’m sure it warmed Jesus’ heart.
But then Jesus gets real about what God wants God’s people to do. “Oh, and another thing,” he seems to say, “you have too much stuff. Money and stuff will only distract you from God. Get rid of it, give it to those who have nothing, and live a life of love and service to others.”
Not a message he wanted to hear. Nor one that we want to hear. We spend a lot of time justifying our things, telling ourselves it’s okay to have a lot provided we give some away. But Jesus says we’re supposed to give it all away. All the things that pull us away from God’s presence, and the call to love and serve the Other.
What are the things in my life that distract me from God’s call to love and serve?
