RCL Daily Devotions written by R. Fergus Moir from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
What kind of soil are you? As Jesus’ parable points out, there are lots of options. If I’m honest, my heart isn’t always “good soil.” Sometimes I’m too busy for God’s Word to take root. Other times I forget to water it with prayer. Still other times, there are an awful lots of things in my life that want to crowd it out and choke it. And then there are times when it’s just right. I hear God’s will for me loud and clear and things seem to fall into place.
The good news is that God gives us boundless grace. It’s not like if we’re not “good soil” all the time, we shrivel up and die for good. Just like in my mom’s garden, there are lots of things that can be done to make not-so-great soil into good soil. You’ve got to dig around a bit, fertilize, aerate, water, and so forth. If we’re willing to work at it, there’s no soil that can’t be made ready to receive the seeds of the Word and grow them into bountiful harvests.
Nurturing God, may your grace and love be the tools by which my heart becomes your good soil. Amen.
