Was Jesus the first slight of hand trickster?

OK, I know that’s a bad joke - but sometimes I think that Jesus shares a lot in common with magicians when he manages to miraculously escape arrest.

The difference is, Jesus isn’t magic, he’s divine!

His ability to perform miracles is supposed to convince people of his divinity - but a lot of folks look at him the way we survey a modern day magician. With serious skepticism.

What is different, I wonder, for those who saw the miracles and believed?

God of mystery and wonder, help us to trust in your miracles and believe even when your love seems impossible. Amen
