RCL Daily Devotions written by R. Fergus Moir from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
As always, Jesus flips the script on everything we think we know. Banquets in Jesus’ time were all about bringing community together in the sacred act of sharing food. Often God’s reign is characterized as a banquet, a great feast for all those who are called into God’s holy and eternal presence.
But when have any of us thrown a dinner party for the people Jesus is talking about? When we throw banquets, we invite friends and family, or colleagues, or prominent people we want to bring into our good graces. You and I, sinners as we are, tend to throw banquets for our own benefit. This is not the kind of banquet Jesus is talking about.
God doesn’t follow our customs. God doesn’t send out invitations to those with wealth and power and self-righteous satisfaction, but to those on the margins. And, of course, Jesus tells us we are to do the same thing. Don’t invite those folks who can pay you back. God’s party invitations have no strings attached. Come and dine, be filled with love and grace.
Of course, we are invited, too, not in spite of the fact that we are sinners, but because we are sinners. We, who so often side with the oppressor, are ourselves oppressed by our own sinfulness. We can never repay God for the redeeming love of God in Christ Jesus. We can only come and dine and be grateful for the invitation.
Abundant God, help me to see where I might extend your gracious invitation to those in need. Amen.
