RCL Daily Devotions written by Daniel D. Maurer from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
I had never read before today about the strange ritual of placing a stone on one’s shoulder while the Israelites crossed the Jordan.
But it tells me about the importance of rituals. In today’s hyper-homogenized culture, it’s easy to let traditions and rituals get swept under the rug. If you read many of my devotions I write here on RCL Worship Resources, you’ll find that an ever-persistent theme is how traditions can become a weight on our shoulders.
Well, according to this text . . . yes they can! And quite literally.
Rituals and traditions DO serve a purpose and if we forget our past only to bring on the new, then we never remember the aspects of life that were important to our forebears.
What rituals are important to you and your family?
