RCL Daily Devotions written by Dr. Kimberly Leetch from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
There was a sense of urgency to save the souls of humankind. When Hebrews was likely composed, tensions between Rome and the Jews were reaching a boiling point. Jesus’ followers had been waiting for the return of the Messiah, and all signs pointed toward impending ending. If Paul and the early Christians were to save people, it had to be now.
But life wasn’t easy for those who had come to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. Partly because they were outcasts for their belief, and partly because following meant adopting a sort of meekness that allowed for people to be abused. Paul encouraged those who had already come to believe to remain confident in the faith they had cultivated. It would be a tough road, but it would be eternally worthwhile.
