Exodus 33:12-17, Two Promises: Presence and Rest

Key Verse

[Moses said to the LORD,] ‘Now if I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.’ He said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’
— Exodus 33:13-14

RCL Daily Devotions written by R. Fergus Moir from RCL Worship Resources (see more).

God had had enough of the Israelites acting out in horrible, sinful ways after they had been delivered out of Egypt. God told Moses it was time for this “stiff-necked people” to leave the wilderness and go to the promised land, but said they were on their own: God’s “presence” would not be going with them. Moses argued, reminding God of God’s promises to him and to Israel, and God relented.

I can be pretty stiff-necked myself, stubbornly forging ahead in whatever direction I have chosen, rather than inviting God to help me discern the path God would have me take. I sometimes try to convince myself it’s entirely up to me, that God’s “presence” has been removed, but that’s nonsense. Whenever I pause and ask God to “show me your ways, so that I may know you,” I realize that God is right there, and it was I who removed my presence, not God. Once I give up my stubborn, driving willfulness, I find the path less arduous, and God gives me rest.

Ever-present God, show me your ways, so that I may know you. Remind me you are always with me, and give me rest in you. Amen.
