RCL Daily Devotions written by Dr. Kimberly Leetch from RCL Worship Resources (see more).
God wasn't messing around. God was busy dictating the law to Moses when God realized the people of Israel had given up on God and had made for themselves a golden calf to worship instead. God intended to be done with them, but Moses pleaded for their lives. It worked. God gave Moses the chance to go sort it out. Once there, Moses got angry at their fickleness toward God and punished the people for their wickedness. Not only did he make them drink water with the ash of their burned down god, but Moses also instructed the Levites to kill anyone who had sinned. Three thousand people fell that day. God topped it off with a plague to punish anyone left. No, God wasn't messing around.
While this angry God is a wee bit terrifying, I'm also intrigued by a God who is so passionately jealous for the people's attention. I like this fiery God that wants a front row seat to the people's lives. This is a God that cares deeply for the people and will do whatever it takes to keep them. I don't think God has changed that much. I think God is just as passionate about us as God was for the Israelites. I also think God would go to any length to keep us as God's people. That kind of commitment is incredibly appealing. Yes, I love this fiery, passionate, jealous God. And God loves us, too.
Do you tell yourself every day that God loves you, as well?
