2 Corinthians 8:8-15, Balancing Act

Key Verse

I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written, ‘The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little.’
— 2 Corinthians 8:13-15

RCL Daily Devotion for Thursday, September 26, 2019

RCL Daily Devotions written by R. Fergus Moir from RCL Worship Resources (see more).

But it’s mine! This was my young daughter’s response any time I asked her to share with her little brother, whether it was toys or games or candy. My son, on the other hand, was always quick to share, without question. Yet whenever he wanted to use something of hers, I had to step in and negotiate.

This is what Paul is doing for the Christian community at Corinth. Some of the members there had so much, while others struggled. Paul reminds them, and us, that there are time when we struggle, too. It’s not good for any one person to have too much while others lack. God calls us to share equally with one another in all things. And this message is still God’s truth whether we’re talking about children sharing toys or nations sharing resources.

God, help me to let go of my love of possessions, that I might love and serve you and my neighbor. Amen.
