2 Corinthians 5:6-15, Love Urges Us On

Key Verse

For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.
— 2 Cor. 5:14-15

I’ve often wondered how people are motivated best. Is it through the “carrot” or the “stick” that people can make changes in their lives or get things done that need getting done?

I like the phrase that the Apostle Paul uses from this reading in 2 Corinthians. That love can URGE us onward to continuing and furthering the Good News . . . well, let’s just say that I find that as good a motivator as any.

All throughout scripture, though, we see both forms of motivators. That is, we see plenty of carrots and plenty of sticks.

I believe the one that ends up sticking the most is that the carrot comes on a stick and that we are reminded that the real reason we’re even here is because of the love of God and the grace of existence itself.

Thank you, God, for motivating me to follow your lead. Amen.
