Despite God’s ongoing promises of deliverance to the Israelites, Saul’s armies are cowering in fear of the Philistines’ great champion, Goliath. And who comes, fearlessly, to challenge him? A shepherd boy.

David’s confidence is not in his own abilities. He’s half the size of the Philistine champion at best. Instead, his confidence comes from a faith so complete, it doesn’t even occur to him that the enemy has a chance. Who is this giant that he thinks he has a chance against God?

I seldom share David’s easy assurance. I look around and see the horrible acts of nations and those in power and I quail in fear at the seemingly insurmountable odds. But who are these to stand against the living God? I am not fond of military imagery, but I will recognize my place among the lowly foot soldiers in the army of light. I will do my piece knowing who is in command.

Delivering God, may I heed your command to reach out in love against all odds.
