RCL Daily Devotions written by Daniel D. Maurer from RCL Worship Resources (see more).

Before I begin some commentary for today’s devotion, I need to reprint some of today’s scripture more fully. I think you’ll see why.

I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins are forgiven on account of his name.
I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young people,
because you have conquered the evil one.
I write to you, children,
   because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young people,
   because you are strong
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

Although I do wish that the Johannine author would have included mothers in this list (hey, the writer is always a product of his/her time), you do need to admit that this scripture really is beautiful!

It’s amazing how you can read something in the Bible and think that you’ve never read it before. At least, that was my experience reading this.

Maybe “living forever by doing God’s will” actually means exactly what it says . . . literally. We enter into eternity by becoming the hands, feed, mouth, eyes and ears of God. The rest of the world will fall away—it will wither like dry grass. But the Word of the Lord will stand forever.

What are your thoughts on this reading? What were your impressions? How can you begin to live in and within God’s eternity?
